Politics

There's been a lot of press coverage in the UK at the moment about a certain political party and a certain individual, namely the British National Party (or BNP) and Nick Griffin. I felt like putting some words down somewhere and then remembered that I have this old blog thing. Which is nice.

Some background reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_National_Party

Given the economical climate and the lack of trust in our current government in the wake of the expenses scandal, it's not surprising that a minority of people are looking for a different solution. When the results of the European elections showed that the BNP had won two seats in the European Parliament, there was an outcry that this was the degeneration of British politics and that we could be sliding towards fascism.

The BBC, trying to maintain its impartiality, decided to invite the leader of the BNP (and an elected MEP) to Question Time, the political show that allows members of the audience to ask questions to elected officials. This caused a couple of senior cabinet ministers to lambast the BBC, saying that the BNP weren't a legitimate party due to certain rules they have about letting non-minority people joining (whites-only please).

Now, I can understand why members of the public (and certain politicians) didn't want Nick Griffin to appear on TV to the population of Britain. I certainly don't want anyone, much less an elected official, inciting hatred between the people of Britain over different race and religion.

I disagree, however, that the BNP should be censored. I believe (and I hope I'm not wrong in my belief) that the vast majority of the British people have enough common sense to realise that a bigoted, racist, self-centred political party won't do the country any good if they get into power. However, we should be the ones to make that decision, not the current government, and not the BBC.

The leaders of this country, and of the three main political parties, should also see this as a wake-up call. A minority of the British people are growing disillusioned with the petty bickering and corruption of the current government that they are turning away from them. What's worse is that a growing number of the British people are choosing not to vote because they don't see the point. One party is much the same as the other. The government should be doing their utmost to re-engage the electorate (nice words there...) and get their vote and get them believing in government again.

Every single person in this country needs to take responsibility too. Every British national over the age of 18 has a vote, regardless of race, colour, creed, religion... They need to use it. They need to show that, while the current parties aren't perfect, they're certainly better than what some of the more extreme parties could be... If we don't vote, we're just as guilty as those who do vote for the extreme left or extreme right parties.

While watching Question Time, these points have come to mind:

- The BNP have been using Winston Churchill as a figurehead for their party as the archetypical British man. However, Winston Churchill was an American woman... And therefore by the constitution of the BNP, he wouldn't allow to be a member of the party.
- Nick Griffin being quoted as saying that Adolf Hitler "went a bit too far." Hmmm...
- It should also be noted that certain politicians aren't answering the questions. Jack Straw on the immigration policy of the country leading to the rise of the BNP.
- Sayeeda Warsi hit the nail on the head with her point that the main parties need to stand up and do their job to minimise the BNP vote. Good on you girl. Now actually get on and do it!

I don't like Nick Griffin. He has one eye higher than the other. You can't trust him. :P

I feel the need to play Final Fantasy IV again, mainly because of some of the awesome tracks on this soundtrack. I especially like Phantom of the Zeromus! Although the slightly gothic rock version of the same song is passable too. Think I might invest in the DS version of the game with the birthday money I get even though I have a perfectly acceptable PS1 version of the game sat on my shelf...

Which reminds me, I should get rid of some of the archive games I have lying around.
So my Mum phoned me up this morning to ask me if everything was okay. I replied that yes, things were fine, why was she so concerned? Apparently she's worried that I'm "distancing" myself from everyone around the home area. Admittedly I've not been back to visit people there very often this year. This is because, for once, I am content in myself and tend to be busy on the weekends when I used to head back. I still phone back home (maybe I should do that a little more often), so I don't think I'm neglecting people.

Apparently me suggesting that I want to try out skiing next year has also got her into a flap, worrying that I'm going to break my leg. If I worried about that sort of thing then I wouldn't drive anywhere anymore because of what happened to my brother...

It's coming up to Father's Day soon, and she hinted (well, said) that I should make the effort to return to see him then. I may make a concession with him to see him the day before I go and visit RichOx for the twenty20 action. If I'm going to take him out for a meal, I think he'd be just as happy going on a Thursday.

Typically though, with Mum asking me if anything was wrong I'm now wondering if there is anything wrong. There isn't, but I don't really like these negative questions being spun my way.

Hmmmm.

In other news: Pie

I am blown away by the size of the Wii Virtual Console catalogue. There are some absolute corkers available on there which I've never played (most of the Zelda series, for instance, plus Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Breath of Fire II, Phantasy Star, etc). Plus some awesome games I loved when I was growing up - Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World to name a few...

All they need now is a copy of Chrono Trigger for download and I'll be a very happy camper... :D

Sheesh, is it bad that I'm more interested in a console for the back catalogue than the games it has available!?

In a remarkable turn-around it looks like my brother could be leaving hospital as early as tomorrow. At the moment his leg is still oozing slightly from the drain he had in his wound, but if that stops then they're willing to let him go. My Mum's worried that this may be a bit soon as he's currently living in a flat with a number of stairs to climb up with his crutches, but he's gotta learn at some point.

By the sounds of it he's making pretty damn good progress. :D

I got a phone call from Michelle at the self-confidence class I used to go to asking me if I'd be willing to take part in a newspaper interview about the organisation - the idea being that we give it a bit of press about the work that she does. I was more than happy to agree to it. I could be almost semi-famous. Okay, so it's not going to be the national press, but I'm up for it. :D

I need to write a poem using alliteration and onomatopoeia this week... Hmmmm...

Oh, and congratulations to the mighty Portsmouth FC in winning the FA Cup. :D I was happy~~~~~

Just got back from the hospital. My brother's doing fine (hasn't lost his sense of humour... Shame that he never really had one in the first place.......) His leg is fractured in two places and they've stuck a metal pin into it so the bone fuses around it. His knee's pretty swollen and he's not allowed to put any weight on it for three months. As he said to me though, it could've been a lot worse so we're grateful that this is the only thing that's wrong.

Phew.

So my brother had a car accident today. He was minding his own business on the motorway and someone pulled out in front of him. Needed to be cut out from the car and airlifted to hospital. He's currently having an operation to repair a fracture in my leg (they're installing a metal rod to piece the shattered bone back together). Thankfully that appears to be the extent of his injuries at the moment... I'm going to go down to the hospital tomorrow after work to annoy / surprise him. Provided I can actually find where the hospital is!

Mum's there with him at the mo and his girlfriend. So hopefully he'll have enough people around. Bit of a bugger as it's only just been his birthday too!
